Since 2017, close to a million Rohingya have fled violence in Myanmar and taken shelter in Bangladesh, mostly around Cox’s Bazar and on Bhasan Char. The Rohingya are stateless: they are recognised as citizens nowhere, which is why this has lasted so long and why it cannot be solved by aid alone.
The camps are among the most densely populated places on earth. Shelters are bamboo and tarpaulin. Every monsoon brings flooding and landslides that undo months of work, and every dry season brings fire risk. Children born in 2017 are now at school age and have never seen anything else.
We work in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char alongside the Bangladeshi authorities and the wider aid effort, on the parts of daily life that decide whether a family stays healthy:
A dignified, voluntary and safe return is the only real end to this. That is not in our gift. What is in our gift is making sure that in the meantime a family eats, a shelter holds through the rain, and a child learns to read. We will keep doing that for as long as it is needed.

In a camp this dense, waterborne and skin disease spreads faster than anything else. Soap and clean containers prevent illness far more cheaply than treating it.
