Sadaqah Jariyah

Build a well. Change a village.

Give clean water that keeps giving, long after you have gone.

Clean water is still out of reach for millions of families across Africa, South Asia and Yemen. Children fall sick from dirty water. Women walk miles to fill a single bucket. When you build a water well with Muslim Help UK you give one of the greatest forms of Sadaqah Jariyah: an ongoing charity that keeps rewarding you every time someone drinks, cooks or makes wudu with the water you provided.

The best charity is giving water to drink.

What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah Jariyah means ongoing charity. It is a gift that keeps benefiting people long after you give it, so the reward continues to flow to you even after you have passed away. A water well is one of the strongest forms of it, because every drink, every meal and every wudu made with that water is a continuing blessing. The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught that the best charity is giving water.

A water well for someone who has passed away

Losing someone we love is painful, but Sadaqah Jariyah lets us keep giving on their behalf. Build a well in the name of a parent, a spouse or a child who has passed away, and let clean water flow to families in need as a continuing reward for them. Tell us the name when you give and we will record the dedication. We send you confirmation once the well is complete.

The water crisis, and our response

Across Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, millions live without safe water. In villages hit by drought and conflict, families walk miles each day for water that may not be safe to drink, and children are exposed to cholera and typhoid. We work on the ground to change that. We build hand pumps, tube wells and deep wells, and we deliver 6,000 litre water trucks and water barrels to the driest and most deprived regions, from Bangladesh to East Africa and Yemen.

How your well is built

  1. We survey. Local teams identify the community with the greatest need and check the ground and the water table.
  2. We build. The well is sunk, fitted and tested, using local labour wherever possible.
  3. We hand over. The community is shown how to maintain it, so it keeps running for years.
  4. We confirm. Where you dedicated a well, we send you the details so you can see what your Sadaqah Jariyah built.
